Karl Jaspers, Ralph Mannheim (Trans.) - The Perennial Scope of Philosophy (1949)
He wrote a lot on “what is philosophy” and also spoke quite a lot on radio about this topic, about his life, about how he came to understand philosophy and how philosophy related to life, existence, history and religion etc. Many of his radio broadcast have been preserved and made available to the public.
Have located the radio programs, cannot download, but can capture; need to transcribe to German, and then translate to English and Chinese.
Some videos of his interviews are available in YouTube and other sources, can be downloaded easily, but need to make subtitles.
Most of his published books in English are available in e-copies and downloaded. A few have Chinese translation. Most German original editions do not have e-copies…..

我们最近在准备一些哲学入门的专题，但历史上众多哲学家，我们究竟该从谁入手呢？
哲学入门，首先我们要搞明白，我们不是要学习一种专门的哲学知识，学会背一些哲学名词、哲学家的名字或者概念，亦或是学习一种哲学史。哲学入门，首先便是教会人思考。而我们所倡导的某种哲学方向，是希望这种思考能够引向一种对生命的感悟。如果不是要做专业的哲学学者，不靠玩弄词藻或逻辑混口饭吃，普通人只是希望哲学思考能够解答一些生活中的疑惑，那么最终，我们的思考一定不能脱离于生命本身。
于是我们将目光投向了德国哲学家雅斯贝尔斯，我们选择他有充分的理由：他的存在主义哲学与东方思想有所交汇，能够搭起一座比较好的桥梁。他起初是一位心理医生，而后转向了哲学，再之后转向政治。因此他的思想始终是关于人的思想，比较接地气，更易于我们东方人理解。晚年他与纳粹政权的冲突，更凸显了他的人道主义精神。
蹊跷的是，雅斯贝尔斯，这位汉娜·阿伦特的导师，马克斯·韦伯的密友，马丁·海德格尔的前辈与交谈者，在简中世界获得的关注并不多。或许是他因为“接地气”而不受哲学专业重视，也可能是他的思想在二十一世纪“已经过时”。但在我们看来，雅斯贝尔斯的人道主义精神以及对自由和生命的追问，正是我们当下虚无缥缈的“躺平”世纪所欠缺和需要的。如果哲学入门是将人们引向对生命的反思，那么雅斯贝尔斯将是我们绝佳的引路人之一。
